Back at it

Slipped a bit there.

Guess it's about time to get some new junk up here. Both in the gallery and the journal.

So I decided to leave the anthro art more or less alone for the time being. There's a couple pieces I'm working on but nothing special. Figured I might as well focus on what I have a chance of being good at: 3D rendering. So I'm trying to build a portfolio of some decent work to hopefully attract some more outside work.

Stay tuned for plenty of 3D stuff, some photography and the occasional anthro piece.

Yeah, I've been getting sucked into photography deeper and deeper. Picked up a Nikon D300 when they first came out in early December and already have around 11,000 shots on that guy. Pretty incredible camera. And recently, I bought a used (obviously) Nikon F3 from a coworker. I'm working on a 3D model of it, so there'll be progress renderings in my gallery. Should be interesting to see how my pics come out on film compared to digital.

I've been a fairly big anime fan for a really long time. Recently however, I've been going kinda nuts. I've torn through several complete series of fansubs. Most recently Solty Rei which I need to let digest a bit before forming an opinion on. Oh! Edo Rocket is another I watched that I was impressed with. You can see a list what I've been watching here: [link] Just click on 'DopeNessMonster's anime list' at the top. Yes, I'm a geek.

Damn furry freaks!

Thu Mar 15, 2007, 4:01 PM
I'm taking it back.

Okay, I've been needing to vent on this for a long time. Seems like in the last couple years the public opinion of the furry scene has completely crashed. Okay, it's been heading there since at least '98, probably longer. I remember Carla Trotman's Burned Furs campain back then and it was the first I'd considered that people might think of the scene as a bunch of perverted freaks. Went to Kaincon '98 and got my first taste of just how far out there some in the fandom are when I saw my first fursuiter video. I was willing to write that off as an obscure oddity until Anthrocon '99. Seeing that many extremists in one place blew my mind. That was my first and last real furry convention. There was a few great artists there I talked to, but it didn't offset the weirdness.

Now, it seems like the growing dogma of the fandom is haunting me. Those freaks in the minority are messing everything up. Making me look bad to people that don't know me, and are often not even IN the fandom. I don't even want to admit to anyone that I draw 'furries' anymore. I've been drawing this stuff since '89 or '90 and didn't even know a fandom existed until '95. And now I feel like I'm seen as a perverted weirdo for drawing animals acting like humans? Screw that. I'm taking it back.

So, if you're into furry porn, fursuits, or any of the other messed up splinters of the fandom, you've been disowned. I just want to be able to draw some DAMN FUNNY ANIMAL COMICS without being sneared at.

Tag, I'm it.

Guess the object of this thing is to give out 5 things about me people don't know. Easy enough.

1. I miss the old days of ICQ. When we'd actually write out COMPLETE THOUGHTS in messages and not just rapid-fire short messages. It was sort of halfway between email and what IM is now.

2. I hate eating. I really wish I could just not eat. It's always interrupting everthing I do.

3. I'm the worst procrastinating mofo on the planet.

4. I've probably got more pet peeves than anyone. Ever. I'd love to expand on that, but it seems to make people like me less. Weird.

5. I hate people, but I'm a nice guy. I'm totally screwed.

Guess those are really just a few things that've been on my mind. I might tag someone, I might not. But I appreciate Broken Zuba for thinking of me and giving me a chance to post this.

The (almost) yearly update...

Thu Jan 25, 2007, 12:13 PM
Been a while.

Whew, that was so out of date. A lot has happened since last May :P

1. I moved. Got a freelancish job at Planet Studio in Atlanta doing 3D work. The Frank Lloyd Wright rendering in my gallery is the first real output from this. Did an assload of renderings for the new Rogers Athletic catalog. My boss (more of a friend really) is a huge Frank Lloyd Wright fan and wants to do several series of rendered prints based on his work. Anyway, I'm living in Atlanta now. Hanging out with the S(ue) crew. Having fun.

2. Still haven't finished my bike. Bought a donor bike, swapped the engine, rode my bike with the old rear end for a week, broke the chain, which broke two gears in the tranny, fixed that but need to get the new swingarm built to finish it.

3. Started collecting Tamiya RC cars. Again. Sort of. I got seriously into RC in early '87 when I got a Tamiya Fox. The next year I bought an Avante, one of the coolest RC cars ever made. Then real cars came into the scene and RC got pushed aside. Last year, I bought a Bruiser from a friend at work and got into collecting the cars I wished I had.

4. Still plan on building the tricycle. In fact, I started designing the fixtures for a new frame.

5. That's about it I guess. See ya in a year :D

Not really. Hopefully I'll bother to update this more often.

Yearly update :P

Mon May 15, 2006, 12:10 PM
About that time..

Things are progressing, got some cool stuff going on. I love being vague :P Anyway, thought I'd update this thing since it was so far out of date.

I got a daily deviation from Smashmethod for the Lunacycle Final rendering. Can't thank him enough for that. Thanks again Smash :)

Currently, I'm kinda scrambling to get my bike back together. Planning on going to a track day at Mid-Ohio in late June, and the bike's in a million pieces. I need to get the engine together and fabricate the swingarm, among other things. It's coming along well though, and should be killer when it's done.

I'm also working on some neat design projects at work. People are saying that high-end 3D renderings will be replacing photography for product pictures soon. I've been working on polishing my realistic rendering skills for that market lately.

And in my spare spare time, I'm still picking away at 3D modelling all the parts for the 1:8 scale Mikado steam engine. Very long-term project, but it'll be worth it.
